How to use recibir in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: recibía, recibías, recibíamos, recibían. Use it for things that used to arrive regularly (recibíamos el periódico en casa) or for background situations in the past. It is also common when describing how people were treated over a period of time: los empleados no recibían capacitación. Like all -er and -ir verbs, it carries a written accent on the í in every form, and nosotros recibíamos is the form most learners need for shared memories, such as what a family or team used to get every month.

Examples

  • Antes recibíamos el periódico en casa todas las mañanas.

We used to get the newspaper at home every morning.

  • Los empleados no recibían capacitación suficiente.

    Employees weren't getting enough training.

  • Mi tía recibía visitas todos los domingos.

My aunt had visitors every Sunday.
