How to use levantar in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular: levantaba, levantabas, levantaba, levantábamos, levantaban. Use it for routines in the past, especially with the reflexive: De estudiante me levantaba a las once. It also sets the scene in a story: Me levantaba de la mesa cuando entró el cliente. Remember the accent on levantábamos. It also works for describing what used to be built or raised in a place, and for physical routines like lifting weights at the gym.

Examples

  • De estudiante me levantaba a las once los fines de semana.

As a student I used to get up at eleven on weekends.

  • Me levantaba de la silla cuando entró el cliente.

I was getting up from my chair when the client came in.

  • En el gimnasio levantábamos pesas tres veces por semana.
