How to use oír in the conditional

The conditional is regular, built on oir-: oiría, oirías, oiríamos, oirían. Use it for hypotheticals (con audífonos oirías mejor) and reported speech. It also expresses guesses about the past: lo oiría en la radio means 'he must have heard it on the radio'. Si cerraras la ventana, no oirías tanto ruido is a typical unreal condition.

Examples

  • Con audífonos oirías mucho mejor.

With headphones you'd hear much better.

  • No sé cómo se enteró; lo oiría en la radio.

I don't know how he found out; he must have heard it on the radio.

  • Si cerraras la ventana, no oirías tanto ruido.

If you closed the window, you wouldn't hear so much noise.
