How to use suponer in the conditional

The conditional also uses supondr-: supondría, supondrías, supondríamos, supondrían. It is useful for weighing consequences in meetings: eso supondría un retraso de un mes. It also appears in polite hypotheses and reported speech. Suponería is a common learner mistake; think of pondría to get it right. With si and the imperfect subjunctive, it describes consequences in unreal situations: si cerráramos la planta, supondría despedir a cien personas. The conditional perfect uses supuesto: habría supuesto.

Examples

  • Eso supondría un retraso de un mes en la obra.

That would mean a one-month delay on the construction.

  • Cambiar de proveedor supondría renegociar todo.

Switching suppliers would mean renegotiating everything.

  • Nunca supondría algo así de ella.

I'd never assume something like that about her.
