How to use convertir in the imperfect

The imperfect is regular, with no stem change: convertía, convertías, convertíamos, convertían. It describes repeated transformations in the past (los domingos mi papá convertía la cochera en taller) or a process in progress: la conversación se convertía en discusión. Use the preterite when the transformation is complete: se convirtió. Every form carries an accent on the í, and the imperfect is one of the few tenses of this verb with no stem change at all, which makes it easy to form.

Examples

  • Los domingos, mi papá convertía la cochera en taller.

On Sundays my dad turned the garage into a workshop.

  • Poco a poco, la conversación se convertía en una discusión.

Little by little, the conversation was turning into an argument.

  • Antes convertíamos los archivos a mano, uno por uno.
