How to use escribir in the imperfect
The imperfect (escribía, escribías, escribíamos, escribían) is regular. It describes writing habits in the past (escribía un diario) and an action in progress when something else happened: escribía la propuesta cuando se fue la luz. Every form carries an accent on the í, which makes the tense easy to recognize on the page. Use it as well for what a writer used to write about: escribía sobre política.

En la universidad escribía para el periódico estudiantil.
In college I wrote for the student newspaper.
Mientras escribía la propuesta, el cliente cambió los requisitos.
While I was writing the proposal, the client changed the requirements.
Antes nos escribíamos cartas; ahora solo nos mandamos mensajes.
We used to write each other letters; now we just send messages.
